Episode 319: Keeping it Real with the Super Mamas: Paulina’s Quarter Life Tune-Up

You’re probably wondering what is a quarter life tune up is. We often talk about self-care for moms, taking care of your mental health making time to do things you love, but what about our physical health? This week, Paulina talks about what’s going on inside her body and the recent feelings that have made her focus on taking care of herself in all ways. Her personal version of tuning herself up. We also talk about the emotions we have felt over the last few weeks, especially with all the tragic events going on in the world. We have been “feeling our feelings”, as we explain during the episode, and we realize that we all have a different healing process.

Pick or Tip of the Week

The last few weeks have been a little heavy so Paulina was looking for some laughs. Her pick is Cristela Alonzo’s new Netflix special, “Middle Classy.” These are the types of shows she loves because she watches them late at night after everyone has gone to sleep and she just laughs. She also loves the Ali Wong Netflix special.

Bricia’s pick is Paws of Fury: the Legend of Hank. While she loved the movie itself (it’s a great summer movie for kids!), you have to tune into the episode to hear why attending the movie premiere was such a cool experience for her son, Eduardo.

We talked a lot about our life coach, Victor Pierantoni Check out his past episode.

We also reference one of our first episodes with Lily Martinez. Listen to that throwback and let us know if we should have her back on the show!

Episode 318: Parenting from Abundance with Lilliana Vazquez

Our guest this week, Lilliana Vazquez, has held many titles - style expert, former television host on E!, and most recently, mama to her almost one year old son, Santiago. Like most episodes, our conversation is all about parenting but this one is a little different. We’re not only talking about Lilliana’s road to becoming a parent, including IVF treatment and her birth story, but also what is means to parent in abundance. She believes that making sure her own cup is full before anything else helps her be the best parent she can be. We also talk about the difficult feelings surrounding motherhood, advocating for your health (always!) and how good it feels to finally be heard.

More about Lilliana: Lilliana is known as one of the fashion blogging OGs, and has carried many titles - from blogger to style expert, TV commentator to television host on E!. The enterprising star has curated a career that began from her small blog (CheapChicas.com), which she launched in 2008, to being seen by millions daily on numerous platforms including NBC TODAY, "Extra" to "The Talk," "Rachael Ray," "The Wendy Williams Show" and "Steve Harvey."  Today, she’s at PEOPLE (The TV Show) as a Special Contributor covering all things entertainment, red carpets, runways, and celebrity pop culture news.

Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, to a Puerto Rican father and Mexican mother, Lilliana is a first-generation Latinx who radiates gratitude for the dedication and sacrifices that her family made for her. Among the first in her family to attend college, she graduated from George Washington University, where she earned a double-major in international business and entrepreneurship. Lilliana has always used her platform to advocate for her community, and fight for Latinx representation in media and entertainment, as well as raise awareness on social issues.

In April of 2021, Lilliana announced she was pregnant with her first child, after battling with six years of infertility and IVF. After living this experience, Lilliana wishes to use her voice and platform to break the taboo around infertility and how it affects the Latinx community. In July 2021, Lilliana announced the birth of her healthy baby boy, Santiago “Santi” Merrick McGrath. Lilliana hopes to continue sharing about her journey to motherhood, the lessons, the challenges and hope with other mothers and those who hope to experience motherhood one day.

Vocabulary from this week’s episode

IVF: In vitro fertilization (IVF) helps with fertilization, embryo development, and implantation, so you can get pregnant.

IUI treatment: Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a simple procedure that puts sperm directly inside your uterus, which helps healthy sperm get closer to your egg.

AMH test: AMH, or anti-mullerian hormone is a substance produced by granulosa cells in ovarian follicles. Research shows that the size of the pool of growing follicles is heavily influenced by the size of the pool of remaining primordial follicles (microscopic follicles in “deep sleep”). Therefore, AMH blood levels are thought to reflect the size of the remaining egg supply – or “ovarian reserve”.

Gentle cesarean: A gentle C-section is a cesarean section which is elective and can occur under controlled situations.

Lilliana’s experience: “You can apply the same principles as a natural birth - skin to skin, cord clamping, vernix, and weight & height measurement can be delayed as long as the baby is okay. You can ask for a clear curtain instead of blue so you can watch the birth. You can also ask the doctor to take their time and be gentle; these are all things to discuss with your doctor if you are planning a gentle cesarean.”

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia’s pick this week is food! She has everything you can think of in her pantry - oils, salsas, etc. - she just wants to try one of everything. She recently tried David Chang’s products like the chili crunch, but her pick is the noodles. These are restaurant quality noodles come in clutch when you don’t have anything to eat.

Sun protection is Paulina’s tip this week. Coola Organic Radical Recovery After Sun Lotion has really helped her daughter’s recover from summer camp since they’re spending all day in the sun. They lather up before bed and it helps them so much in the morning.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Paulina recently traveled to Hawaii with her family and knew she needed some new, little games to keep her kids entertained. She found these magnetic games from the Purple Cow store that are perfect for the car, in her purse or on the plane because everything stays together in the case.

Bricia has been loving two shows: 1. Halston, a limited series on Netflix about fashion designer, Roy Halston (this show is for grown-ups ONLY 😬) and 2. Mythic Quest on Apple TV+. Does anyone else watch this, or is it just Bricia? LOL

Episode 253: Learning to Feel Your Best, Nourish Your Body, and Thrive Postpartum with Lorena Garcia, CEO of Majka

Hola Octubre! Fall is here and the year is winding down. Even though we’ve spent most of the year indoors, it feels like it has flown by.

Lately we have been talking a lot about the fourth trimester and how important it is for moms to prepare not just for pregnancy, but for after baby’s arrival. This week’s guest completely agrees. We interview Lorena Garcia, co-founder and CEO of Majka, a brand dedicated to helping support moms thrive postpartum with resources and lactation bites, boosters, oats, and more and we’re big fans.

The three of us are sharing stories about our Mexican moms and entrepreneurial tips we’ve learned throughout the years, but we also talk about Lorena’s personal experience of her fourth trimester and her inspiration behind creating Majka. She shares why it’s okay to ask questions during pregnancy and ask for help & support after baby, and how we must learn to prioritize ourselves because we are not just moms; we are still our own people who need to heal.

More about Lorena: Lorena Garcia is Mexican entrepreneur and currently the co-Founder and CEO of Majka, a brand dedicated to help support moms to thrive postpartum. Lorena has founded and managed multiple successful businesses and is a digital marketing and branding expert.

Lorena’s Favorite Majka Recipe

Lorena’s youngest son was born earlier this year, so she is incorporating Majka into her daily routine to help nourish herself and baby! She shared her favorite smoothie recipe below to try with the lactation booster. You can find more recipes for drinks with lactation boosters and lactation bites on Majka’s blog.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia keeps getting swindled by Instagram ads. 😂 She loves biker shorts and found these by Blanqui which are designed specifically for postpartum. It’s like a faja and shorts all in one.

Paulina’s pick is a face paint kit from Amazon that she bought for Zixta. It’s tough to keep her occupied while Sabina and Krista are doing their school work, but Paulina paints Z’s face in the morning and tells her to transform into whatever animal she’s painted, and it works! She plays pretend all day.

Her other tip is the game called Spot It and Spot It Jr., available in both english and spanish. Paulina sets it up for the girls while she’s making lunch or doing something for work, and it keeps them entertained together.

Episode 245: Keeping it Real with the Super Mamas: Bricia & Augustina's Birth Story

IMG_8809.JPG

You have all been asking for Bricia’s birth story and we finally recorded it for you! We even had a special guest - Augustina herself. Since we’re still recording our episodes via Zoom, you’ll occasionally catch Augustina crying or Paulina swooning over her during this episode - muñequita hermosa!

Like most births, things didn’t exactly go as Bricia planned. Luckily she was prepared with research, help from her midwife, and really made sure to advocate for herself during every doctor appointment to make sure she & baby would have the best options possible. It’s amazing that Bricia really spoke her truth.

We also talk about the baby’s breastfeeding & bottle feeding routine, how Bricia is nourishing her body postpartum, and what a change it has been between her first pregnancy & birth with Eddie to this second experience with Augustina. Both mom & baby are doing well and we are so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for all the well wishes you all have share with us. Bricia can’t wait to come back in a few weeks to record more brand new episodes!

Pick And Tip of the Week

Bricia has SO many picks this week! First, be sure to read her recent blog post about her essential postpartum items. She also still highly recommends (#notsponsored but she wishes she was 🤣) the book The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother. Check out a few more pick and tips she has to share below:

  • After sharing her Boob Shells on Instagram Stories last week, many of you replied for Bricia to try the Haakaa breast pump, which she also loves!

  • These really pretty pacifiers from BiBs - Augustina took to them right away and loves them!

  • The Kiinde Twist Milk Storage bags - you pump directly into the bag, the nipple screws right on the bag, and they’re recyclable.

  • Swaddles from Lou Lou and Company which are so soft and stretchy! Since Augustina is still preemie size and doesn’t have many onesies in this size, she basically swaddled in these blankets all day.

  • Every Mother app - workouts to help resolve diastasis recti. They quick, easy exercises that Bricia can complete everyday. For more informations about diastasis recti, you can also listen to our recent episode with pelvic floor therapist Sara Reardon, the Healthy Vagina Whisperer.

  • TIP - Talk to the lactation consultant the the hospital and if they can lend you a medical grade pump before your discharged. It’s so great! You can also check with your insurance to see what pump they can lend out to you too.

Since Paulina has three birth stories of her own, she also shared a few tips for moms who are about to give birth:

  • Tip #1 - Vocalize what you need. When Bricia told the doctors she wasn’t comfortable with certain choices and wanted to try other options first, she stayed in control. If you stay vocal, you can voice your concerns and be an advocate for yourself. Do not be afraid to speak out.

  • Tip #2 - Prepare yourself. Do research for all the possibilities so when doctors and nurses starts throwing fancy terms at you, then you kind of understand and know. And remember you are allowed to ask for resources!

Episode 244: Clean Beauty for the New Mom and Beyond with Gabriela Babila creator of @MatanaOrganics

You know we are big fans of beauty products and self care. We find that incorporating our beauty and skincare routines into our days is one of the easiest ways to get self care as busy moms, and this week’s super mama guest understand that.

This week we interview Gabriela Babila, creator of clean beauty brand Matana Organics Skincare. She started her business when she realized she couldn’t find clean, safe beauty skin care products during her pregnancy and began making them at home. The line is nature-inspired skin care for pregnancy, postpartum and all mothers who seek clean, safe, and organic products and best of all it’s organic, plant based, and cruelty free.  Gabriela talks to us about how she became fascinated with the beauty & power of plants, and using nature to create her skincare line. Her passion & positivity for her family, her business, and motherhood really shine in this episode and she is dropping all the gems (or matanas, as you’ll learn) that we needed to hear.

More about Gabriela Babila: Founder, wife, girl mom, LA Native and clean beauty enthusiast, Gabriela Babila is the heartbeat and face behind the brand, Matana Organics. With a background in psychology and expecting her first child, Gabriela knew how important it was to nurture the body AND mind during this transition. Struggling to find safe and effective skincare products to help manage all of the physical changes pregnancy would induce, she thought about her own mom, an immigrant + single mother, and how she would approach her concerns. Her mother didn't have much, what she used for skincare she made, teaching Gabriela the power of natural remedies. So she decide to make it. And now she is sharing it with all mothers.

Matanas from this week’s episode

Matanas = gift in Hebrew

“I love being a mom but there’s more to my identity.” - Gabriela Babila

“The desire to become an entrepreneur, to do something that i was passionate about; I couldn’t hide that from myself.” - Gabriela Babila

“The fear is not enough of a reason to not go for it.” - Gabriela Babila

“I cant worry about what can go wrong because what if it doesn’t go wrong? What if it goes right? And I’ve wasted precious time and precious brain power thinking negatively.” - Bricia Lopez

Episode 222: Mentoring Your Community & the Importance of Play with Mom Boss Blanca Gonzalez, VP of @Nike LA

BGonzalez_Web.jpg

The year just started and it feels like it’s flying by! This week on the show, we interview Blanca Gonzalez, General Manager/Vice President of NIKE Los Angeles/West Territory. We talk about how making clothes for her Barbies as a kid sparked her passion for product, about being an advocate for children with disabilities, and the importance of having access to sports & play. She also stresses the importance of using your voice & being authentic in your work environment. This is an interview you'll want to replay over & over!

Before the episode, Paulina and Bricia discuss anxiety and the expectations that adds to the “alka-seltzer feeling” as Paulina describes it. Paulina talks about how she’s been feeling anxious since coming home from our Walt Disney World trip (btw - don’t forget to enter our giveaway! Learn more here). She decided to take a break from social media and has a new morning routine, because she knows that having structure keeps her busy and keeps her mind away from anxious thoughts. Paulina is also conquering it by talking to her loved ones and strengthening her relationship with God. When speaking about her feelings with her friend, the friend questioned Paulina saying, “So what if it all that happens?” It really gave Paulina a new perspective about her anxiety and feelings, and has helped her think: What is this going to teach me? What am I supposed to learn through this experience?

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia is still on her “no shopping” sabbatical and it’s so hard, especially with the new Ivy Park line that launched (you know how much she loves Beyonce). This week she is sharing her all-time FAVORITE pen. It doesn’t smear all over her pinky when she journals, it makes her writing pretty and it’s so light! Send her all the pens since she still can’t buy new things. 😂

Paulina asked for a few things for Christmas, one of them being the Party of Four kit from Drybar. It’s a game changer because it not only comes with great products, but also has travel sizes which are great for travel and also throwing in your purse when you have things to do throughout the day. It helps her get out the door quick & easy every morning.

Episode 210: Knowing Your True Identity with @officialTLopez

T Lopez www.OfficialTLopez.com Heyday.JPG

New episode Tuesday! This week we’re talking to T Lopez, recording artist and entertainer with 20 years of experience. This mama of two gave us one of the most spiritual interviews we have had in awhile. We talk about how T realized she needed time to figure out what her next business venture was, how she exercises her faith, and how she’s helping her daughters shape their identities with the help of her new podcast. Our interview with T came at the right time in our lives, and we hope you feel the same clarity we did!

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia is currently in love with Alterna hair products. It’s important to remember that prepping your hair with the right products before styling your hair (curly, straight, waves, whatever) makes a big difference in the final outcome. Alterna sent her a few products to try and she figured out the perfect hair cocktail for her hair. Their CAVIAR Anti-Aging® Replenishing Moisture CC Cream gives such great texture, heat protection and more. When you finish styling, use their CAVIAR Anti-Aging® Working Hairspray. But when you’re a busy mom like Bricia and you only have time to air dry your hair, use Caviar Anti-Aging Smoothing Anti-Frizz Air-Dry Balm. It’s awesome on wet hair - scrunch it into you hair, air dry and go, and your hair will look great.

Paulina’s pick this week is Halloween Time at Disneyland! After spending time with her family there last week, it made her so happy and put her in the holiday mood with all the pumpkins. They also have an altar and Plaza de la Familia at California Adventure from the movie “Coco”, where you can place the name of your loved one. From the parade to fireworks, it made her entire family so happy. Paulina recommends visiting the park anytime from now until the end of the year because the holidays at the park are so magical.
