Episode 322: Protecting Your Assets and Family: Estate Planning 101 with attorney, Carmen Rosas

Death is not an easy topic to talk about... for some people, at least. This week our guest is Carmen Rosas, Founder and Attorney of Carmen Rosas Law,  and we’re talking about something she's very comfortable discussing: estate planning. We’ll admit, we had a lot of questions for her because we’re in the midst of making our own plans! We learned how to choose the best plans for our families when we’re gone, what to do when it comes to our assets and most importantly, how to make plans for our children in case something unexpected happens. Everyone has different priorities and requests when it comes to their last days, and Carmen’s mission is to help us feel confident in making the best decisions for ourselves - and she definitely accomplishes that with us.

More about Carmen: Hoop-wearing, award-winning and stereotype-defying attorney Carmen Rosas is on a mission to help women chase and secure the bag. Recognized as a Top Latino Lawyer by Latino Leaders Magazine, Carmen draws on more than 10 years of experience in estate planning to equip women to protect themselves and their families by protecting their assets. Her work has also been featured in The Huffington Post, Forbes, BELatina, Mamiverse, Modern Latina, and Create & Cultivate where she shares her guidance and legal advice with women around the country.

Estate Planning Key Words

in Carmen’s own words

  • Trustee - in charge of someones estate when they pass away

  • Assets - house, bank account, business, 401k, retirements, brokerage, etc. anything with cash value is an asset

  • Estate planning - the process and completion of who will be receiving all of your assets in case something may happen to you.

  • Default plan - the state plans for you.

  • Will - part of your estate plan and it will go through your property reassignments and also your property related last wishes. You are also able to go back to your will and

  • Living trust - will keep you out of court. Like a treasure box. You have the key, when you pass away you get to decide what happens to it

  • Guardians - someone who will take care of your kids once you’re gone

You can read more frequently asked questions about estate planning on Carmen’s website.

Pick or Tip of the week

In case you missed it, Bricia went blonde! She’s sharing her top tips for maintaining her new ‘do.

  1. Get some silk scrunchies and a silk pillowcase. Your hair is super fragile and can tear very easily now.

  2. Wash your hair once a week, rinse twice. Mix your blue shampoo with conditioner because it can be abrasive and dry out your hair, but blue conditioner is way better than blue shampoo.

  3. Use your mask as a regular conditioner. If you have regular conditioner left (from pre blonde days) mix this conditioner with oil.

  4. Carry a clear hair oil (no color because your hair will pick it up) in your purse to apply to your ends at lest 3 times a day.

  5. Brush your hair every day at least twice a day (her pick is this brush her stylist gifted her) once in morning & once at night to allows oxygen to flow through your hair strand and distribute natural hair oils.

  6. Lastly, when you’re in the sun, wear a hat! The sun can damage your hair.

Paulina’s pick this week are Skims bras. She is particularly in love with the sculpting bralette and the jelly sheer underwire bra.

Episode 320: Vaccinations for Infants, Toddlers & During Pregnancy: A COVID-19 Discussion with Dr. Erica Pan

There’s so much information out there when it comes to our children’s health. Throw COVID-19 vaccinations for infants and toddlers into the mix, and it just got a lot more overwhelming. But we’re here to help! This week we sit down with an expert: the Deputy Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases and State Epidemiologist, Dr. Erica Pan. We talk about everything you need to know about COVID-19 vaccinations for infants, toddlers and pregnancy. She answers the questions we’ve all been wondering, like how the vaccine trials for children work, vaccine dosages for our littlest ones, and even getting vaccinated during pregnancy. Dr. Pan is a mom to two teenage daughters, so she understands how some parents may be feeling uneasy with so much new information. We hope this episode helps ease your mind and get your family vaccinated!

This episode is brought to you by the CA Department of Public Health.

#VaccinesSaveLives

More about Dr. Erica Pan: Erica Pan, MD, MPH, FAAP, the Deputy Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases and State Epidemiologist, was sworn in July 13, 2020. Prior to joining CDPH, Pan served in several positions at both the Alameda County Public Health Department since 2011, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health from 2004 – 2011. She is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco. She maintained her clinical work at San Francisco General Hospital and at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals in San Francisco and Oakland in Infectious Diseases until 2019.

Our Conversation with Dr. Pan

What can you tell us about the latest vaccines now available for infants and toddlers over 6 months?

Are children receiving the same dosage as adults?

What does the vaccine dose schedule look like for kids?

What do the vaccine trials entail? Who are these kids? What are they looking for?

What about super mamas who are listening who are currently pregnant or thinking about conceiving? Is it safe for them to receive the vaccine? As a mom, what tips do you have for them to protect themselves and their babies?

Does it matter when you get vaccinated during your pregnancy? First trimester vs. third?

Is it true women’s periods can change after receiving the vaccine?

Does the vaccine affect fertility?

Where can parents take their children to receive their COVID-19 vaccines?

How can we continue to help our family, friends and community receive the best information regarding COVID-19?

Call your pediatrician or health clinic to get your child vaccinated or, for listeners in California, go to MyTurn.ca.gov or call the hotline at 833-422-4255 to find a vaccine near you.

Pick or Tip of the Week

This week Paulina is on vacation in Oaxaca, but she’s been prepping for her trip by looking for a new bug spray! She found this natural bug spray that she’s carrying in her purse and also clipped on to the girls’ backpacks so everyone can be protected at all times! Another tip she learned about keeping the mosquitoes away is that they don’t like yellow lightbulbs. What are some other tips you have for keeping the mosquitoes away?

Bricia’s pick is more of a tip, but it’s to get and use a salad spinner. It might take up a lot of space in your kitchen, but trust her, it’s essential!

Episode 261: Keeping Up with the Super Mamas: 2020 Holidays at Home

IMG_7516.jpg

Happy holidays from the Super Mamas! This week we’re catching you up our holiday plans - what we did for Thanksgiving, how we’ve decorated our homes for Christmas, and our parents FINALLY visiting (safely) after a year apart! We also have a new family inside joke about Paulina and Bricia’s daughter that you are going to love. 😂 Bricia is also going on her first trip since Augustina was born and she’s so excited to do absolutely nothing, that she may extend the trip even longer. 😂 Paulina is just glad the girls are back in school after a week long vacation because the house is a mess and she is done cleaning up! At least for now.

We’re so blessed to be able to spend time with our family this holiday season since we know not everyone can due to covid, so we’re soaking in all the bonding while we can! And we’re so lucky to have our Super Mamas sisters! How are you celebrating the holidays this year? Share you traditions with us below!

Our Christmas Tree Decorating Tips

  • Search “Whimsical Christmas Tree” on Pinterest for Christmas tree inspiration

  • Use ribbon. You can change it up every year but keep the same ornaments, and it looks like a completely different tree!

  • Try a theme! Paulina is doing “red & gold” to keep a classic and Bricia has a pink tree.

  • Get shatterproof ornaments while the kids are still little. They may bump into the tree while they’re learning to walk or try to play with the colorful ornaments, so wait to invest in good ornaments until they’re a little older (and less clumsy 😂).

Pick or Tip of the Week

You always have to be prepared for kid sniffles during the colder seasons! Paulina always tries to go for the natural or homeopathic remedies and one of her fave brands is Boiron. The cold calm tablets are non-drowsy and great at the first sign of a cold. You put it under the kid’s tongues and it always helps boost their immune system and not get full blown sick. Anything to help during this time!

Speaking of Fancy trapos like we do in the entirety of this episode, Bricia’s pick are these fancy servilletas. She uses them every time she has get togethers. They’re thick, elegant, and disposable too!

BONUS EPISODE: How We Would Take Our Walt Disney World Trip to the Next Level

9A1142CF-6759-4B30-A88D-352C98AA4957.JPG

Two episodes in one week?! We couldn’t keep it all the Disney Magic to ourselves! ✨

We're still dreaming about Walt Disney World, but we got to talking about what we would do differently next time. We would definitely schedule more meals at restaurants like Be Our Guest at Magic Kingdom (we heard the grey stuff is delicious 😉) and Jaleo, a José Andrés restuarant at Disney Springs. We would also plan a day to rest & recharge at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and take advantage of the resort amenities, like a massage or pedicure (for tired feet!) at the beautiful Senses Spa and then let the kids enjoy the waterslide at Beach Pool.

Towards the end of the episode, we interview more Disney Cast Members about new attractions coming to Walt Disney World. First, we speak with Stephen Lim, Walt Disney World Ambassador, which is our new dream job. 😍Stephen’s knows all things Disney and speaks about Disney's Hollywood Studios' newest attraction, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway opening March 4, 2020. We also interview Fabrice Becker, former Olympic Gold Medalist (check that off our bucket list ✔️) & Director of Creation of Cirque du Soleil's newest show, Drawn to Life. This collaboration between Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering opens for previews March 20, 2020, and officially debut April 17, 2020, so you won’t want to miss this!

Episode 212: Restoring Your Marriage, Faith and the Power of Words in Your Life with @RosieRivera

image6.jpeg

This week on the show, we sit down with Rosie Rivera - entrepreneur, international speaker, author and, oh yeah, the youngest of the Rivera Dynasty. This mama never imagined her life turning upside down over night the way it did; we talk about how many factors in life like death, children, and other issues can really put a strain on a marriage. Together with her husband, they started a podcast called “The Power of Us” to share their relationship experiences and show listeners that a successful marriage takes effort and intention on both parts. Rosie’s interview will inspire you to hold on to your faith even in your darkest times.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia’s pick this week are these tweezers for $14.97 from Tweezer Guru! It includes 4 pairs of tweezers, including a super thin pair for ingrown hairs and blackheads (it’s an art that her facialist showed her how to do). She ordered it thinking it wouldn’t be good since it was so cheap, but she ended up falling in love with the set and then got upset when she realized she had been spending over $20 on all the other tweezers she had previously owned.

Paulina has a great tip this week - did you know you can link your Delta SkySmiles to your Lyft rideshare account? Paulina uses Lyft all the time in LA (we’re sure you do too!), and now she gets miles every time she takes a ride in the U.S.. If you travel a lot, you can easily rack up the miles! Episode 211: Healthy Living at Every Age with Dr. Sylvia Melendez-Klinger

Sylvia Klinger Headshot 2.jpeg

This post was brought to you by Aguacates Frescos – Saborea Uno Hoy. We received compensation to write this post, but all opinions expressed are our own.

Happy October! New month, new episode. This week, we speak to another returning guest, Dr. Sylvia Meléndez-Klinger, Registered Dietician and spokesperson for Aguacates Frescos – Saborea Uno Hoy. We’re talking about healthy living at every age and the benefits of eating fruits & veggies with lutein like delicious aguacate. Want to learn more about how to keep your brain healthy and possibly even help your kids perform better in school? You’ll want to listen to this episode!

Our Conversation with Dr. Klinger

What is lutein? Tell us more about it!

How does lutein help support healthy eyes?

What is cognitive health?

So there is a potential connection between lutein and our kids performing better in school? And, also a connection between lutein and keeping brains healthy as we get older?

I am not sure if the foods my family like have a lot of lutein. What foods are good sources of lutein?

What are other nutritional benefits of avocado for people of every age?

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia really really loves vegetables and she’s also a fan of organizing. She recently started using the Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce Saver 3-piece, and with her mom as her witness, it actually works! It keeps all the produce much fresher. Bricia even took her produce drawers out of her refrigerator. If you have the space in your fridge, you can keep your fruits and veggies fresher for longer with these containers.

Paulina is the one with a bougie pick this week! She is loving this new lunchbox for Zixta - OmieBox Bento Box for Kids - Insulated Bento Lunch Box. It comes with a thermos that keeps food hot or cold for lunch, and it also has a handle which is great because you don’t need to buy another lunch box or bag to put it in.

Episode 200: Surprise Weddings, Responsibilities and New Stages of Life: #Adulting with @LernandoFopez

It’s our 200th episode! We’re celebrating this major milestone with a special guest - our favorite 😉 brother, Fernando Lopez. This week, we talk to Fernando about how much his life has changed since our last interview with him. From his recent surprise wedding to realizing he’s ready to prepare for a secure financial future (#adulting), Fernando has basically grown up in a month and we’re very proud sisters!

Before the interview, Bricia talks about her successful Hawaiian vacation of piña coladas with tequila añejo and I Love Micheladas mix, and Paulina shares how she survived five hours in the car across the border with her kids.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Fernando has a lot of picks this week. He has been learning all things real estate so he’s informed when he’s ready to buy a new property. He loves listening to the Bigger Pockets Podcast - the earlier episodes are his favorite! He also enjoys watching real estate agent and investor, Stephan Graham, on YouTube. His final tips are true gems: “Wear sunscreen, get a good hat, and get a bottle of I love Micheladas mix and make drinks at home with your friends instead of going to the bar.”

Paulina has two picks this week. First, she loves Airbnb. It’s easy and has great deals if you search far enough in advance. Second, she’s had some trouble keeping her hair color purple and doesn’t want to go to the salon for a touch up every three weeks, but since she started using Celeb Luxury Viral Colorwash and it has made a huge difference keeping her purple nice and vibrant.

Finally, Bricia also echoes Fernando’s tip about wearing sunscreen. She is loving Sun Bum Original Moisturizing Lotion. Whether you use SPF 15, 30 or 50, it doesn’t leave you all white and she didn’t peel or burn. Fernando also suggests a big hat from Home Depot, but to each their own. 😉
