Episode 311: Beauty, Business and Good Moms: An Interview with mother-daughter duo Rea Ann Silva and Erica Dickerson of Beautyblender

Whoa, talk about a real GIRL POWER episode! This week we interview not just one, but TWO incredible super mamas: Rea Ann Silva, creator & founder of Beautyblender and her daughter, Erica Dickerson, Global Beauty Director of Beautyblender and podcast host of Good Moms, Bad Choices. The two have worked together basically since the conception of Beautyblender (when Erica started assembling products in the family garage!) and have since grown the business and their personal relationship. We talk to the duo about managing mom guilt, single motherhood, encouraging your children to follow their heart, and so much more. And of course, there is no shortage of beauty tips from these gorgeous ladies. We are obsessed with these two and the relationship they’ve created both at work and at home!

More about Rea Ann: Rea Ann Silva is a professional makeup artist and the creator and founder of Beautyblender. Her experience spans a nearly 30-year journey as one of the most sought-after Hollywood makeup artists in the industry. As the creative force behind Beautyblender, she single-handedly changed the beauty game. The Beautyblender concept came to Rea Ann while she was the Department Head of one of the first TV shows shot in hi-definition. Rea Ann handled the constant touch-ups with her hand-cut, edgeless sponges to mimic the seamless look of airbrushing. Soon, every celebrity that sat in Rea Ann’s chair wanted their own hand-cut sponge; thus creating the original edgeless sponge. Beautyblender quickly became the secret on set that had every pro talking.

Today, the category-creator holds countless beauty awards and is beloved by both makeup aficionados and newbies as the go-to tool for achieving a perfectly blended complexion. As Beautyblender expands, we continue to innovate easy-to-use products that require minimal efforts yet offer maximum results. In November 2020, Rea Ann was honored at the Smithsonian American Museum of Natural History in the “Only One in The Room” exhibit, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.

More about Erica: Erica Dickerson is the Global Beauty Director of Beautyblender, host of the podcast Good Moms, Bad Choices and a content creator. Her history with Beautyblender began at conception...literally. As the daughter of Founder and CEO Rea Ann Silva, Erica was the brand’s “first-ever product assembler” back when Beautyblender began out of her mother’s garage in Los Angeles. Little did she know that her mom’s side project would turn into the most popular makeup tool in the world.

Before becoming Beautyblender’s Global Beauty Director, Erica pursued acting where she landed a handful of national commercials and major roles on shows like “Bones” on Fox and “Insecure” on HBO.

When she turned 18, Erica left Los Angeles to attend college at Marymount in New York City. After completing her first year, an opportunity arose to assist and road manage Grammy-winning artist, Macy Gray. Yearning to travel and get real work experience, she took the job and worked closely with Macy for three years while she toured the globe.

In 2010, as Beautyblender began expanding into consumer retail outlets like Sephora and the ever- growing social media landscape rapidly changing she became heavily involved in growing the digital side of the brand.

Conceptualizing, producing, and creating the brand voice for Instagram, Youtube, and Sephora’s education team, Erica has played a major role in Beautyblenders massive cult following. With the company’s rapid growth, she was tapped to help grow their Broadcast business where she currently appears on the HSN and QVC. She also works closely in product development creating many of the products that grace the shelves of Sephora and Beautyblender’s other global partners.

Aside from her full-time career in beauty, she is also the host of popular podcast, Good Moms Bad Choices. Over the last three years, she has helped develop a platform and safe space for mothers and women to share, listen and learn about all things related to parenthood, sex, culture, and mental health. Good Moms Bad Choices is rated in the top 5% of podcasts globally and continues to change the landscape of what is acceptable for mothers and WOC to seek, accept and discuss.

Through the success of her Podcast, she just signed a major book deal with Harper Collins based on GMBC and her experience navigating single motherhood slated to release in 2022. She has been featured in Vogue, BET, Good Housekeeping, XO Necole, and recently was honored by Create and Cultivate as one of the Top 100 Entrepreneurs of 2021.

Erica currently resides in Los Angeles with her daughter Irie Jane.

Episode 308: Advocating for Your Health with Sarah & Boo Simms of Lady & Larder

These ladies are putting our sister relationship to shame! In this episode we interview twin sisters, Sarah & Boo Simms, owners of Lady & Larder. You can thank them for being one of the forces that started the charcuterie board trend that’s all over social media right now! Sarah & Boo are big on family and they talk to us about how they balance their work and personal relationship. They also talk about how they supported each other when Sarah was diagnosed with cancer last year. The story makes us just as emotional now as when we heard it the first time, but it’s a great reminder to not only stay on top of your health, but to also advocate for yourself when you know something isn’t right. Get ready to cry, laugh and take notes because these sisters are dropping serious gems that you won’t want to forget!

More about the Simms sisters: Twin sisters Sarah and Boo Simms are the culinary and creative duo behind Lady & Larder – the Los Angeles based cheese shop credited with starting a global grazing board movement in 2016. The two have deep roots in the California hospitality industry and both share extensive backgrounds in the food and beverage industry – Sarah on the culinary and operations side and Boo in design and marketing. Raised under the notion that the dinner table was (and still is) a sacred place, Sarah and Boo maintain that the only thing bigger than their love of food is sharing it with others.

Lady & Larder was built around their profound respect for American-made seasonal ingredients and an immense appreciation for the role beautiful food plays in creating moments of connection and joy - offering small-batch cheese, natural wine, craft beer, farm fresh flowers, local bread and curated gifts that spark joy. Since their start, Lady & Larder has become the go-to source for those looking to entertain in Southern California - specializing in edible displays, created with seasonal crudités, fruit, cheese and charcuterie. For those looking for something special out-of-state, Lady & Larder also offers DIY cheese and charcuterie board kits, custom virtual classes and an array of seasonal gifts that ship nationwide.

Most recently Lady & Lady was featured as one of Oprah’s Favorite things in 2019, was featured in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Forbes, Los Angeles Magazine, O Magazine, and Martha Stewart Weddings . To learn more, visit ladyandlarder.com and check them out on IG @ladyandlarder.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Our collective tip for this week is to schedule your physical! Go to the doctor. Stop pushing off what is necessary for you to do for your health.

Bricia’s pick is the Lady crackers from Lady & Larder. They’re so good and perfect for your cheese boards! You can pick them up in store if you’re local to Santa Monica, CA or order them online.

Paulina tip that everyone should know is that every insurance carrier has a patient advocacy office. If you have questions, comments or complaints, speak up! This is the department you want to talk to and they’ll make things right for you.

Episode 304: Bring the Receipts to the Table! Learn How to Successfully Communicate with Your Partner with Dr Veronica Eyo, LCSW

As mothers, the caretakers, let’s be honest - after the past two years, we are burnt out. After pushing through for months, we think we’ve reached the light at the end of the tunnel, the final countdown to this pandemic and now we feel like we are back to normal… but are we really feeling okay?

In this episode Dr. Veronica Eyo, LCSW, talks about how we can learn to repair the relationships we have with our partners, kids and even ourselves, after what was a dark period for many of us. We lost a lot of time connecting with our partner because we were focusing on other things - our health, working & learning remote, caring for loved ones - and she’s walking us through steps on how to reconnect with each other successfully. Yes, that might mean that we might have to bring some notes notes to future arguments but trust Dr. Eyo when she says it’s for good reason! At the end of the day, there is always room for repair and this episode will encourage you to change for the better. Trust us too, we’re taking lots of notes (and then bringing them back to the table at a later date. 😂)!

Before the episode

Paulina also talks about her weekend trip to Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico and the Airbnb she stayed in. Since she often vacations in Airbnbs with her family and Bricia is currently working on a rental property, she asks her for her suggestions on what all rental homes should have for families. Check out her list below.

  • Kitchen - basic pantry items like salt, pepper, commonly used spices, olive oil. A microwave is great for heating up kid-friendly food like pizza. Plastic utensils, dishes and cups are also a great option, because no one wants to deal with broken glass with kids!

  • Bathroom - basic shampoo, soap and clean towels. If you have a busy rental, make sure you update the towels and linens often! If they get used a lot, they may lose their quality.

  • Great instructions for television use, instructions for jacuzzi/pool, etc. While it’s helpful to reach out to the property owner, it would be better if you really didn’t have to. 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • Basic cleaning supplies - extra trash bags, paper towels, broom/vacuum, etc.

  • First aid kit! Because accidents happen.

What would you add? Share with us in the comments!

More about Dr. Eyo: “Hello. I am Dr. Veronica Eyo, a Bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and it’s my passion to help mamas, new and seasoned, navigate the challenges of parenthood. I graduated with my doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California where I researched the factors that influence the success of student mothers in higher education institutions.

My journey as a therapist has led me to work with clients throughout different stages of life. I began working with older adults particularly with end-of-life issues before I transitioned into working with adults and couples. During my time working with adults, I mostly worked with women in their twenties and thirties, to manage difficult emotions, set appropriate boundaries, discover their resources, and ultimately grow into feeling confident and competent in themselves. My work with couples focused on deepening communication and understanding to build empathy and trust.

I transitioned my practice into primarily working with mothers after I became one. Some of the experiences that I navigated, especially in the beginning, led me to seek specialized training in working with moms but especially with mamas of color. I believe that our shared experience can add to the building of rapport in navigating this pivotal life change.

I have advanced training in diagnosing and treating antenatal and Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMADs), as well as trauma and infertility. I’m certified in Perinatal Mental Health through Postpartum Support International. Additionally, I am certified in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).”

Gems from this week’s episode

“The last two years it’s mostly about managing the mom role, the wife role, but where do I find time for me?”

“I’m pouring from an empty cup.”

“I’ve lost time for me and I’ve lost time to connect to my partner.”

“How do you take care of yourself? Do you even know how to take care of yourself? We forget.”

“As a therapist and a mom, I believe in repair. We can try again.”

“I think as mothers, we put these expectations that we have to be the best communicators or we always have to show up for [our families], but the thing is, we’re human too. And we also have other things that pull us. “

pick or tip of the week

Paulina’s tip this week is to schedule date time with your partner. It can be hard to be spontaneous with a busy schedule (work, kids, etc.) but if you commit to setting aside time to be with your partner, it’s something you can both look forward to.

Bricia also suggests a scheduling tip. Set aside one hour a week for house keeping. Imagine that running your home is like running a business and you & your partner are co-CEOs. Following through with it is the hardest part but it’s something you can do together and another way to practice communication and delegate who does what.

Episode 268: Relationships in the Pandemic - A Valentine’s Day Special with Samara Fabrick

“Part of what keeps eroticism alive in marriage is separateness. You need to be your own person and your partner needs to be their own person, and when you come together as the Venn diagram, that's where the sexy, spicy comes.”

- Samara Fabrick

Are you feeling the love this week? 🥰 Ahead of Valentines Day, we brought back previous guest, Samara Fabrick, a couples therapist who talks to us about relationships during the pandemic. So many of us are facing issues with our partners like never before and Samara is breaking down the pros & cons to our newly realized problems. She is sharing ways that we can get our sexy back with our partners during quarantine and when we need it in the future!

Listen to our previous episodes with Samara that will help set the mood for Valentine’s Day:

More about Samara Fabrick: Samara Fabrick is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Beverly Hills for the past 20 years. Samara specializes in working with clients suffering from anxiety as well as a specialization in relationship and couples therapy. She taught the premarital course, Making Marriage Work, at the American Jewish University for 15 years.  As part of her extensive work with couples, Samara works with a variety of sexual issues including those related to dating and sexuality in the course of long-term relationships. Samara has been married to her husband for 26 years and has two grown children.

How to Get Your Groove Back 😉

  1. Make sure you are taking care of yourself and practicing self care. You need to feel good about yourself first before you focus on anyone else.

  2. Find something that feels novel, or new. Samara suggests a few dates ideas below.

Valentine’s Day Date Ideas

  • Get someone to watch the kids and take a night drive with your partner. Park somewhere and fool around a bit.

  • If you live close to to the beach, take a drive up the coast. Super relaxing.

  • Have a picnic in your backyard or the local park. Do the things that we used to do at the beginning of the pandemic that have become complacent.

  • Do what feels sexy and special - take a bath or hot shower together, read a book.

  • Make a date to have sex! It might not feel sexy to schedule it on the calendar, but it obviously matters enough. You NEED to make time for your partner! Lock the door and tell your kids it’s mommy & daddy time. Your kids will survive. 🤣

  • Paulina’s suggestion - Prior to covid, she and her husband used to visit sex shops together. Now her husband will buy her something sexy online and have it delivered. It’s a fun surprise for both of them.

Divorce Rates Spike in China due to Coronavirus Lockdown

Paulina mentions how not sexy these sock gloves are (her pick from last week’s episode) but they are SO nice for your feet!

Samara’s favorite books right now - Girl, Woman, Other: A Novel by Bernadine Evaristo and The Vanishing Half: A Novel by Brit Bennett

We’re all also loving with making cocktails at home, especially with Fortaleza tequila! Not sponsored.

Samara’s guilty pleasure is Below Deck on Bravo.

And yes, we’re still obsessed with Bridgerton. Can you blame us?! We’re getting in the Valentine’s Day mood.

Episode 250: Asking For a Friend - Super Mamas Q&A

SUPER MAMAS_014.jpg

Back by popular demand, it’s a Super Mamas Q&A! We love answering your questions on Instagram Stories, DM, email, and voicemail, and we were getting so many that we decided to create a new series dedicated to answering them.

This week, we share advice and our personal experiences with anal incontinence, postpartum depression, how to make the most of “mommy and daddy time”, the best tips for online learning, sibling arguments, and starting your own podcast.

Want to ask something else? Email us at hello@supermamas.com or call the hotline at (424) 326-3707. We could feature your question in a future episode!

Pick or Tip of the Week

Paulina was having trouble keeping Krista’s iPad in place during her school time. She found this iPad holder that swivels so she can move it when she’s writing and readjust when she talking to her teacher.

Her second pick is something she loves and hates. 😂 Paulina bought Zixta a bag of kinetic sand, and it’s been great for keeping her occupied for hours while the Krista and Sabina do their schoolwork. And it’s surprisingly not as messy as she thought!

Bricia is sharing Augustina’s night feeding routine. Remember to always consult your doctor, but this is what works for her.

  • 4PM: Breastfeeds for about 45 minutes. It’s long, but great bonding with the baby.

  • 6:30PM: Bath time for Augustina

  • 7PM: Bottle feeds her 6oz. of breastmilk (this is Bricia’s favorite bottle for her) and puts her down for the night. Then Bricia pumps whatever she can and stores it for her midnight feeding.

  • Augustina sleeps until 2AM. Bricia keeps this bottle warmer in her room because it doesn’t take much room and uses a skincare fridge to store the milk she pumped earlier for the nighttime bottle (which she’ll repurpose for her skincare when Augustina stops feeding in the middle of the night 😝). She feeds Augustina another 5-6oz. and the baby sleeps until 7AM.

Her best tip is to find your baby a bottle they like! It helps so much with overnight feedings, saves a lot of time. Plus your partner can help too.

This is still #notsponsored, but Bricia and Paulina are both loving the results they are getting from the Every Mother app program. They feel the difference in the back, core, and overall well being.

Episode 212: Restoring Your Marriage, Faith and the Power of Words in Your Life with @RosieRivera

image6.jpeg

This week on the show, we sit down with Rosie Rivera - entrepreneur, international speaker, author and, oh yeah, the youngest of the Rivera Dynasty. This mama never imagined her life turning upside down over night the way it did; we talk about how many factors in life like death, children, and other issues can really put a strain on a marriage. Together with her husband, they started a podcast called “The Power of Us” to share their relationship experiences and show listeners that a successful marriage takes effort and intention on both parts. Rosie’s interview will inspire you to hold on to your faith even in your darkest times.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia’s pick this week are these tweezers for $14.97 from Tweezer Guru! It includes 4 pairs of tweezers, including a super thin pair for ingrown hairs and blackheads (it’s an art that her facialist showed her how to do). She ordered it thinking it wouldn’t be good since it was so cheap, but she ended up falling in love with the set and then got upset when she realized she had been spending over $20 on all the other tweezers she had previously owned.

Paulina has a great tip this week - did you know you can link your Delta SkySmiles to your Lyft rideshare account? Paulina uses Lyft all the time in LA (we’re sure you do too!), and now she gets miles every time she takes a ride in the U.S.. If you travel a lot, you can easily rack up the miles!
